Writer Ashitha P K (popularly known as Ashitha) passed away on Wednesday at 12.55 am at a private hospital in Thrissur.
She was 63.
Born on April 05, 1956 at Pazhayannur in Thrissur district, she did her schooling in Delhi and Mumbai before joining Ernakulam Maharajas college for English graduation. Her biographical work that was published recently had memories from her school days.
Apart from writing short stories, novellas and children’s literature, she played a huge role in introducing Malayalees several works from other languages. She also popularised ‘haiku poems’.
Kalluvecha Nunakal, Vismayachihnangal, Ashithayude Kadhakal, Athu Njanayirunnu and Parayam Namukk Kadhakal are some of her famous works.
Husband Ramankutti was a professor at Kerala University. Daughter Uma is also a known figure in Kerala through Ashitha’s stories.
One story from ‘Kalluvecha Nunakal’ is part of the curriculum of Higher Secondary education in the state. Ashitha has won several prestigious awards including Kerala Sahithya Academy award for short stories, Lalithambika Antharjanam award, Edasseri award and Padmarajan award
