Environmentalists across the world today observe one hour as Earth Hour.
Kerala faces a shortage of electricity during summer seasons. Earth Hour is a global movement to spread the importance of power conservation and environmental protection.
This year, the earth hour falls on March 30. People are encouraged to switch off as many electrical equipment as possible for an hour from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday, their local time.
Famous monuments across the world including Eiffel Tower, Paris, Empire State Building, New York City and Pyramids of Egypt will also observe Earth Hour by switching off the lights.
The first Earth Hour was held on March 31, 2007, in Sydney, Australia at 7:30 pm, local time. In October 2007 San Francisco ran its own “Lights Out” program inspired by the Sydney Earth Hour. After their successful event in October, the organizers decided to rally behind the Earth Hour being planned for March 2008.
