All eyes are now on Priyanka Gandhi as speculations rife about her candidature against Narendra Modi from Varanasi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
She is the AICC General Secretary who is in charge of the western UP which includes the PM’s constituency. Besides, to avoid a set back in the Hindi heartland over Rahul’s second seat, Priyanka’s candidature is a necessity, some leaders think.
Priyanka had hinted the possibility of entering the fray several times. When asked about contesting from Rae Bareli, she said: “why not Varanasi?”.
Bhim Army leader Chandrasekhar Azad Ravan, 111 farmers from Tamil Nadu and a former BSF jawan who complained against the food quality in the Forces are also planning to take on Modi independently. SP-BSP-RLD alliance is also expected to announce their candidate soon. However, if Congress okays Priyanka for Varanasi, the ‘mahagatbandhan’ might back her, as they did in two other seats in UP in which the other members from the Gandhi family are contesting.
