As Kerala Congress (M) denied the Kottayam seat for its working chairman and Thodupuzha MLA P J Joseph in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, an internal rift is reaching the boiling point.
P M George, Kozhikode district secretary of KC(M), has reportedly submitted his resignation in protest to the decision. He alleged that the party fielding former MLA Thomas Chazhikandan in its lone seat in the Lok Sabha elections is to help the Left Democratic Front.
Meanwhile, CPIM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan hinted Joseph faction’s entry to LDF if they “leave UDF first.”
LDF is fielding CPIM district secretary V N Vasavan at Kottayam. It has to be seen if Joseph will strike a deal with LDF at this moment. CPIM denied the Kottayam seat for Loktnatrik Janata Dal which had created a ruckus in the front. The party struggled to convince LJD why it can’t give the Kottayam seat this time. After week-long discussions with LJD became fruitful despite seething Dal workers even demanding to quit the front, it will not be easy for CPIM to back aspiring Joseph in Kottayam. He would rather be inducted to the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry if they strike a pact.
Former minister and Kaduthuruthy MLA Monce Joseph, a close aide of P J Joseph, said that the workers are let down by party leadership. Another party leader T U Kuruvila said Jose K Mani has secret deal with LDF in the election.
Joseph resigned from the V S Achuthanandan ministry to merge with Mani’s faction in April 2010.
In 2011 Assembly elections, he retained the seat and joined Oommen Chandy cabinet as irrigation minister.
The Kottayam seat was represented by Jose K Mani, son of party chairman K M Mani in the 16th Lok Sabha. He resigned the post to contest to Rajya Sabha.
