A 7-year-old boy from Malappuram was recently diagnosed with the West Nile Fever.
This illness, which is caused by the West Nile virus, is transmitted to humans via mosquito bites. The mosquitoes get the virus through infected birds. There is no vaccine for this virus exists now
“West Nile Fever is very rare. The boy has been started on supportive treatment and is being monitored,” says Dr Sakina K, Malappuram District Medical Officer (DMO). “It is not usually seen and this is a one off case. Person to person transmission is not possible, so people should not get worried unnecessarily.”
Even it is summer or monsoon, the mosquito-borne diseases are spreading rapidly in Kerala and some new types are evolving by the time.A recently conducted survey showed that the threat of another mosquito borne illness looms over parts of Kochi.
