A Class 8 student donated her earrings to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF) and even inspired a senior student to donate a ring.
T S Kalyani of Mahakavi G. Memorial School at Nayathod in Ernakulam district took off both her earrings, totally weighing half a sovereign and just four months old, as soon as a message was read at the school assembly seeking donations to CMDRF. Soon, Unnimaya of Class 10 donated then her ring, influenced by the younger student’s gesture.
Teacher Ravikumar queried with Kalyani if she has consent from her parents, to which her confident reply was: “No need sir, they won’t object.” Yet the teachers called her father Sajeesh, who offered his support to the daughter.
The donated ornaments are kept at the school. Principal V. Pradusha and Head Mistress P. Leena said they will be donated to CMDRF after consulting the education department.
Kalyani had won the first prize for Sanskrit poetry, essay and quiz at the Ernakulam revenue district competition. Besides, she bagged the second prize at the state-level maths festival conducted by the Kudumbasree Mission. Kalyani’s father Sajeesh works as manager at a hotel near the airport. Her mother is Deepti, and has a brother named Kasinath.
