Congress president Rahul Gandhi will have to fight with two namesake candidates as well in the Lok Sabha elections in Wayanad constituency. On the final day to file nominations, one K E Rahul Gandhi and one K Raghul Gandhi filed papers from the constituency.
One Sivaprasad Gandhi is also on the list.
However, the final list will be available only on Friday, after the scrutiny.
Namesakes in the fray have been a spoilsport in the elections narrowing the chances of major candidates, including in the Lok Sabha polls. In 2004, V M Sudheeran of UDF lost to LDF’s KS Manoj by 1,009 votes, while his namesake V S Sudheeran polled 8,281 votes.
In 2009, LDF’s PA Mohamed Riyas in Kozhikode had three namesakes-K Mohammed Riyas, P Mohammed Riyas and PA Mohammad Riyas. He lost to UDF’s M K Raghavan by a margin of 838 votes after his namesake candidates managed to carve out a total of 4,000 votes.
In Palakkad constituency in 2009, UDF’s Satheeshan Pacheni lost to M B Rajesh by a margin of 1,820 votes after his dummy candidate E V Satheesan bagged 5,478 votes.
However, Congress believes that the namesakes in Wayanad this time can maximum reduce the margin of Rahul’s victory by a few hundred votes while LDF hopes for an upheaval.
