The researchers of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Italy developed plant tendril like robot,which can curl and climb.
The new development is expected to boost the way for shape changing wearable devices.The plant inspired model explored,plants movement to growth, and in doing so they continuously adapt their morphology to the external environment.
The researchers studied the natural mechanisms by which plants exploit water transport inside their cells, tissues and organs to move, and then they replicated it in an artificial tendril.
For the purpose,the researchers first understood how large a soft robot driven by the aforementioned hydraulic principle should be, in order to avoid too slow movements.
The small,soft robot is made of PET tubes,and with electrically charged particles.1.3 Volt battery these particles are attracted and immobilized on the surface of flexible electrodes at the bottom of the tendril; their movement causes the movement of the liquid.This technique will be a great addition for creating devices of different shapes or shape changing ones in the near future.
