As the stand-off continued over the entry of young women at the hilltop Sabarimala temple, the Pathanamthitta District Collector on December 8 extended the prohibitory orders in the hill shrine, Nilackal, Pamba areas to four more days.
The prohibitory order bans the assembly of four or more people until Dec 12. The police have arrested BJP leaders, including state vice president N. Shivarajan, for violating prohibitory orders at Nilakkal on Saturday.
The police had requested to extend the orders until January 14 and submitted a report to the district collector in this regard.
The opposition Congress-led UDF and BJP had been on a warpath against the state ruling LDF government for the past several weeks, demanding the lifting of prohibitory orders. Three UDF MLAs have been staging a satyagraha at the portals of the state Assembly raising the same demand.
BJP state general secretary AN Radhakrishnan is also on an indefinite fast before the Secretariat since last week.
The Pinarayi Vijayan led govt on Thursday made its stand clear that the prohibitory orders imposed at the temple cannot be withdrawn now, even as the ‘Satyagraha’ by three opposition UDF MLAs at the state Assembly against the curbs, entered its fourth day.
