National awards controversy: Ridiculous move says, Director Bijukumar Damodaran
National awards ceremony landed in an unprecedented controversy after the winners were informed that President Ram Nath Kovind will only be presenting awards to 11 out of the total 140 recipients.
As per tradition, the President of India hands out all the awards. This time President Kovind only will be giving out 11 awards, with the remaining to be presented by Information and Broadcasting Minister, Smriti Irani.
“How can Smrithi Irani gave awards to National winners by overruling Indian president,” says Award-winning filmmaker Bijukumar Damodaran in his facebook post. “This is the act of de grading the integrity and prestige of National film awards,” he said.
“A small minister can never replace that honour. It is a national shame Smrithi Irani” he added.
