Ahead of elections, communal tensions are rising across the country. After miscreants closed meat shops in Gurgaon in Haryana, a Muslim was beaten up on Monday alleging that he sold beef.
Shaukat Ali, 68, was beaten by a mob at Biswanath Chariali of Assam and was forced to eat pork meat. He has been doing business in the area for the past 35 years. From the footage went viral on social media, it can be heard the mob asking him if he is a Bangladeshi and if he has Identity cards. The country has seen violent protests in the northeastern states against the Citizenship Bill of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government.
The police rescued him and registered a case against the mob.
CPIM Polit Bureau member and Raiganj MP Mohammed Salim tweeted: “Firstly, beef is legal for consumption with ‘fit-for-slaughter’ certificate in Assam, it’s not illegal. In places like Kokrajhar, 10 different non-Muslim communities eat Beef. These goons don’t care about cows, they just need an excuse to unleash their hatred for the Muslims. A 68 yr old man was beaten by goons who forced him to eat Pork in public while abusing his religious faith just because they “suspected” him of selling “beef”. We should hang our heads in shame.”
