The Kerala High Court on Friday disqualified Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) MLA KM Shaji for six years after he was found guilty of adopting corrupt practices to win polls.
The petition was filed by Left Independent candidate M V Nikesh Kumar in connection with the election. Nikesh Kumar alleged in the petition that Shaji instigated communal polarization during the election campaign.
HC also observed that election has to be conducted again at Shaji’s constituency, Azhikod.
While announcing the verdict, the HC bench of Justice PD Rajan also asked Shaji to pay Rs 50,000 as court expense to Nikesh. The court rejected Nikesh’s demand to be declared as the winner.
