Lakshadweep Territorial Congress Committee organised a meeting at Kavaratti, capital of Lakshadweep islands today and meeting was attended by leaders from all ten islands of Lakshadweep.
The meeting discussed important issues concerning welfare of people of islands. Leaders pointed out that current Member of Parliament from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) P P Faisal, has not been able to fulfill needs of people of islands. Being a lone seat in Lok Sabha, it was pointed out that Lakshadweep MP PP Faisal made false promises to the people in his election speeches and wrong claims in election manifesto to misguide the people but no work has been done for welfare of people, even after four and half years of being in office.
Lakshadweep islands are geographically isolated from mainland and good transportation is eseential for the people. It was told in election speeches that ticketing problem will be solved in three months and if not then MP will resign from the Parliament. Sadly even today when there are few months left for the national polls, nothing has been done, people still wait in long queues and no proper mechanism is there to cater to issues of ticket distribution for ships.
There were claims presented to people of Lakshadweep, like benefits to fishermen community through fishermen villages, development of super specialist hospital on public private partnership model especially for Island people, introducing one ship every year for Lakshadweep, initiating sustainable tourism. In every sector from health, tourism, fishing, people can see through these false claims as Lakshadweep islands got unfair treatment by the dismal performance of the current MP in terms of delivery of services and implementation of his election manifesto promises.
Till today there are inadequate health services for native people of Lakshadweep, no avenues of employment with resorts still being shut down, loss to fishermen and native economy because of dry tuna fish procurement fetching only Rs.199 per kg as compared to benefits what island received in earlier days when Indian National Congress Party with Late Haji PM Sayeed Sahib as the leader to serve the people.
“There were claims of educational reforms, sadly in this realm also tabs were only given to few students from eleventh to twelfth standard as promised that they will be given to all and students were further harassed saying they have to sign a bond to ensure safety of tabs else they may be asked to pay full working condition price. Our seats for medical education were increased from 10 to 13 under Central Government quota in previous Lok Sabha 2009-2014, however now we have only two seats out of which non-ST (schedule tribe) candidate goes to Kerala and ST candidate goes to Bhopal”, remarked a student out of anxiety of bleak future for native students on condition of anonymity.
