Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan here on Friday submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind, heightening speculation he was set to return to electoral politics for the BJP in Kerala. Kummanam may contest as the BJP candidate from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency against Shashi Tharoor in the coming general election.
Kummanam, who was the state chief of the BJP in Kerala, was appointed as Mizoram governor in May last year. Speculation of his return to electoral politics had spiked in the wake of the Sabarimala agitation. The name of Kummanam had been suggested for the Thiruvananthapuram seat, along with other BJP leaders such as Suresh Gopi and even Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted his resignation, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi will discharge the additional duty of governor of Mizoram until a replacement for Kummanam is appointed.
