Kerala Facebook Group GNPC Runs Into Trouble For Liquor Tales, Charged
In a state which records annual liquor sales of over Rs 12000 crore, criminal offences were registered against a hugely popular Facebook (FB) group that celebrated wining and dining, for allegedly promoting alcohol consumption in Kerala on Tuesday.
The police have booked the Thiruvananthapuram-based couple, Ajithkumar and Vineetha, administrators of the page for sanctioning posts for promoting public and underage drinking.
“We have registered a case against the promoters of the Facebook group,” Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner P Prakash said told PTI. Police also approached Facebook with a request to close down the page but it was declined, P Prakash told PTI.
The activities of the controversial Facebook group called “Glassile Nurayum Platile Curryum (GNPC)”, which means fizz in the glass and curry on the plate, were against the anti-liquor awareness campaign launched by the department, states Thiruvananthapuram division deputy excise commissioner G Muraleedharan.
The group formed on May 1, 2017, have around 38 administrators and nearly 18 lakh followers.
A case under section 153 of IPC (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), section 78 of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act and the Excise Act was registered against T L Ajit Kumar, the founder administrator of the group and others.
