Under a new project, the Kozhikode Corporation authorities will encourage the cultivation of bush pepper by citizens. The new project is a part of the people’s planning programme and will be launched by the Kozhikode Corporation in the coming year 2019-2020.
After receiving an overwhelming response to its organic farming project involving cultivation of plants and vegetables on rooftops and houses, the Kozhikode Corporation decided to launch this project. Under this project, bush pepper saplings will be provided to the people for free.
According to reports, the corporation will procure around 1500 bush pepper saplings in the first year and more saplings will be procured to meet further demands. A total amount worth Rs 16.12 lakh has been sanctioned to distribute the saplings of fruit-bearing trees and bush pepper. Out of this amount, Rs 6 lakh will be used to provide the bush pepper saplings to the citizens.
While talking to the TOI, the Corporation Development Standing Committee Chairman, P C Rajan stated that people in the surrounding areas have started making their own kitchen gardens and the corporation receives constant inquiries relating to the availability of potting mix, seeds and manure.
The corporation decided to take up the distribution of bush pepper plants after the overwhelming response from the side of the citizens. The bush pepper saplings will be sourced from government recognised nurseries and government agriculture institutions. The bush pepper saplings will be given to the citizens through ward sabhas and with aid from the Councillors in their wards.
