HBO shared a tantalizing teaser for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead of the season premiere of True Detective. Though brief, this teaser is much longer than the five seconds we got last week, and also includes the premiere date for the final season of Game of Thrones, which will return on April 14.
It’s unclear if this is actual footage from the show or just a fun little advertisement to announce the premiere date. In the video, Jon Snow, Sansa Stark and Arya Stark walk through the crypts under their family home and hear messages from dead family members Ned and Catelyn Stark as well as Lyanna Stark, who of course is Ned’s sister/the mother Jon never knew. Then an icy threat comes their way, and the Starks show they are prepared to face it down or die trying.
This comes just one week after HBO revealed the first footage of the upcoming season during the 2019 Golden Globes. The final season of Game of Thrones will consist of six feature-length episodes, which have been described as mini-movies.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik, will direct episodes, and Benioff, Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill will write the scripts. As fans know, the TV show has veered off from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books due to necessity, as a new book hasn’t come out since 2011.
