The distribution of 5kg rice at zero cost to the non-priority cardholders in flood affected areas will be extended till December, informed chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The previous decision covered only September and October months.
“Priority cardholders are already receiving rice and other grains at zero cost. Members of weaker and economically backward sections in the flood affected areas are also being issued free food kits,” he said in a Facebook post.
These food kits of Supplyco, worth Rs 500, contain six items, including rice. Priority ration cardholders, workers listed in employment guarantee scheme, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, widows and differently abled people are the beneficiaries of this effort.
The state government had requested the central government to issue free food grains for the flood affected. The centre has allotted 89,540 tonnes of rice, however they have informed that the rice will be charged at ₹25 per kilogram. The rice thus procured is being distributed for free, CM noted.
