A man and his girlfriend were arrested by the Mavelikkara police for snatching gold chains on a two wheeler. The arrested were identified as Biju Varghese (33), a native of Haripad and Sunitha (36), a native of Ennakkad.
The two were arrested after they snatched a 2.5-sovereign gold chain of Sasikala, a native of Kallimel on June 18. Sunitha was riding the 2-wheeler and in the pretext of asking directions, she stopped near Sasikala. Biju who was sitting behind Sunitha grabbed the chain.
The duo were also involved in a similar incident in July where they snatched the chain of an old woman near Chettikulangara market junction. After a week, they made an attempt to snatch a chain by throwing chili powder at a woman who came to visit the Chettikulangara temple. However, the attempt had to be abandoned as the woman bit Biju’s hand.
Biju and Sunitha used to sell stolen ornaments at jewellery shops in Thamarakkualam and Karunagappally. Police have recovered the stolen ornaments.
Sunitha is married and has three children. Biju is a bachelor and a tipper lorry driver. They both became friends through social media one and a half years ago. Following that, Biju started living with Sunitha at Ennakkad. They lived at many places in rented house. The duo decided to snatch chains regularly for quick earnings and luxurious life.
Police said that Biju befriended Sunitha to avoid any kind of suspicion and also to sell the stolen gold.
