The ‘sweeping reforms’ of the World Health Organisation(WHO) has named Dr Soumya Swaminathan as the organisation’s Chief Scientist in a new department.The new appointment comes as she was working as the Deputy Director General of Programs of WHO.
Dr Soumya was the daughter of DR.M.S Swaminathan,’father of Indian green Revolution’ and educationist Mina Swaminathan in Chennai on May 2 1959.She did her MBBS from Armed Forces College and then pursued an MD at All India Institute of Medical Sciences.She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in paediatric pulmonology from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and then worked on tuberculosis and HIV related research and awareness programs.It was in 2017,Dr Soumya appointed WHO as the DDGP.
The WHO’s new division will focus on digital health and innovation in order to stay on par with latest scientific and digital advances in the realm of healthcare.
