Congress leaders from Karnataka on Friday took to Twitter to demand national president Rahul Gandhi to contest from a seat in Karnataka in the Lok Sabha elections.
Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, state president Dinesh Gundu Rao and other prominent leaders invited Rahul to “to contest from Karnataka & herald new developmental paradigm.”
“Karnataka has always supported & encouraged @INCIndia leaders. It has been proved in case of Smt. Indira ji & Smt. Sonia ji. We also want our next Prime Minister of India Shri. @RahulGandhi to contest from Karnataka & herald new developmental paradigm,” tweeted Siddaramaiah.
This is amid the demand for Rahul’s candidature from a South Indian constituency to ensure maximum seats for the party in the region.
“He should also be our representative from South India & for that he should choose my state,” Rao tweeted
We invite Shri @RahulGandhi to contest from Karnataka in addition to Amethi. Karnataka has a strong bond with the Gandhi family having elected Smt Indira Gandhi from Chikkamagaluru and Smt Sonia Gandhi from Ballari.#RaGaFromKarnataka

Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have also contested from South India earlier. Indira won from Chikmagalur in 1978 and Medak in then-Andhra Pradesh in 1980. Sonia was elected from Bellary beyond her husband’s constituency, Amethi, in 1999 elections.
