New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced an immediate ban on assault rifles in the in a move to curb the incidents like Christchurch mosque shootings.
“Today, I am announcing that New Zealand will ban all military-style semi-automatic weapons. We will also ban all assault rifles,” Ardern said. Legislation will be required to enact this. Police permission will be required to buy weapons from now onwards.
Two consecutive mass shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday Prayer on 15 March 2019 claimed the lives of 50 Muslims and injured another 50.
