Washington: Researches say, the blue light from digital gadgets including smart phones would trigger blindness. The exposure to blue light on a constant basis might lead to the entering of poisonous molecules into eye’s light-sensitive cells which later pave the way for macular degeneration according to the research carried out at University of Toledo in the United States.
Macular degeneration does not lead to total blindness but would definitely affect the performance of our daily activities. It is considered as the leading causes for blindness in the United States. It is caused by the death of photoreceptors which are specific kind of light-sensitive cells. The photoreceptor cell requires molecules which is known as retinal to sense light and to transfer signals to the brain which enables us to see.
“It is not at all a secret that blue lights are harmful for eye sight by damaging eye’s retina. The way in which this damage occurs is evident from our experiments and we hope this might lead to therapies which are capable of slowing down chances for macular degeneration or else the development of a new kind of eye drops instead”, says the sources from the University.
The researchers advice people to wear sunglasses which is capable of filtering both UV and blue light outside and not to use smart phones or tablets while in the dark in order to protect eyes from damage.
