The biggest day for gay rights in India is here. The Supreme Court on Thursday gave its verdict on Section 377 of the IPC which criminalizes homosexuality, made gay marriage legal.
The five-judge bench read out four judgments, that allow same-sex couples to marry with dignity, treats every Indian equally in the eyes of the law.
Delivering a unanimous verdict the court said Section 377 is irrational, arbitrary and incomprehensible as it fetters the right to equality for LGBT community. LGBT community possesses the same equality as other citizens, the Bench held.
The bench comprised of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justices Rohinton Nariman, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud, and Indu Malhotra.
