It has been close to 9 months since we watched a Mohanlal movie in theatre after Villain. The actor is facing public ire after issues related with Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
Soon after he took over as president of AMMA, the body reinstated expelled actor Dileep. Also with the resignation of four actors from the association and his recent press conference, Mohanlal was caught in the crossfire.
Coming months is going to be a crucial period for the actor. Mohanlal who has been steadily leveraging his brand value through multiple appearances in various advertisements, and hosting the first edition of Bigg Boss Malayalam, has a good number of projects in the lineup.

Neerali will hit screens on June 14 and it is Mohanlal’s first release this year. Directed by Ajoy Varma Neerali also features the comeback of his yesteryear co-star Nadhiya Moidu. The film was mostly shot in Mumbai and Pune. The actor showcase his new youthful look and has sung a song for the movie after a long time.
Mohanlal recently made waves with his strapping look for Odiyan, where he reportedly lost 18 kgs to get in shape for his younger role. Directed by ad filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon, Mohanlal’s much-awaited film Odiyan is fast-nearing completion. Made on a huge budget, Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj are also part of the cast. This thriller is scripted by Harikrishnan who won the National Award for his script for Kutty Srank. The teaser and poster featuring Mohanlal in the garb of Odiyan has already grabbed eyeballs.
The Nivin Pauly starring Kaymkulam Kochunni has provided several reasons for Mohanlal fans to get excited. Mohanlal is playing Ithikkara Pakki, a cameo role said to be very vital to the story. The Roshan Andrews movie is based on the real-life legend known as the ‘Robin Hood of Kerala’. Mohanlal with a poster in which he is seen as left leg raised laterally, resting it on a block of wood which is a couple of feet tall gained attention with his physical agility.
Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham
Priyadarshan and Mohanlal are teaming up for the historical Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham which is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV, one of the most popular naval chiefs of the Zamorin, who fought the Portuguese valiantly in the late 16th and the early 17th century. The highlight of the film will be extensive sea warfare sequences. The film is produced jointly by Antony Perumbavoor, Santhosh T Kuruvilla and CJ Roy under their respective banners.
The much-awaited Mohanlal starrer Lucifer marks the first directorial venture of Prithviraj Sukumaran. The poster of the movie is released last week with a tagline ‘Blood. Brotherhood. Betrayal.’ Making it even bigger, Vivek Oberoi and Indrajith will also part of the movie. Antony Perumbavoor bankrolls Lucifer under the banner of Aashirvad films. Murali Gopy has written the story and screenplay for this film.
MT Vasudevan Nair’s Bhima is a retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata from the perspective of Bheema which will be played by Mohanlal. Directed by VA Shrikumar Menon, Bhima will be made in two parts and is scheduled to go on the floors by September 2018 for a release in early 2020. It will see coming together of various top-notch actors and technicians from Hollywood and Indian cinema. The movie expected to be a game-changer for the entire Indian film industry, which will pave way for more such big budget films in the future.
