The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department today seized five pieces of gold bars worth over Rs 23.89 lakh from a woman at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Odisha capital. This is the second seizure of the smuggled gold in the last 15 days.
The smuggled gold has been seized under Customs Act, 1962, an official said.
The woman, who belongs to Maharashtra, arrived here by an Air Asia flight from Dubai via Delhi, he added.
BPIA Assistant Commissioner of Customs BC Sikdar said that the seized gold bars weighed around 707.670 gram. Acting on an input, the air intelligence officers of Customs intercepted the woman and carried out a search of her luggage.
During search, the officers five nine pieces of gold bars concealed in her rectum in three capsules wrapped with black adhesive tape. As the value of gold was more than Rs 20 lakh, the woman passenger was arrested, he added.
Further investigation into the case is on.
